Why Enjoyment Matters in Learning

Why does enjoyment matter in learning? Exploring how curiosity and engagement in experiences can help students develop a genuine love of learning. Connecting to their learning, students are often more willing to ask questions and embrace new challenges. Because sometimes the most powerful learning begins when students want to learn, not just when they have to.

We believe that learning should be both meaningful and engaging.

This doesn't mean that every lesson needs to feel like a game, nor does it mean students will enjoy every challenge they encounter, in fact, learning often happens when students are working through something difficult.

However, we do believe students learn best when they feel connected to what they are doing and are far more likely to remember information when they have a positive emotional connection to it.

There is also an important difference between completing work because you have been told to and completing work because you genuinely care about the outcome. While both may achieve the same result on paper, the learning experience is often very different. When students are engaged in what they are doing, they tend to think more deeply, ask better questions and seek solutions, persisting through when things become challenging. The goal is not simply for students to complete learning tasks, but to become invested in the learning process itself.

Many people associate play with early childhood education, but the reality is that adults learn through experimentation as well. Think back to school yourself, most people don't remember every worksheet they completed, but they often remember the science experiment that went wrong, the project they were proud of, the camp they attended, or the teacher who made them laugh.

When learning is enjoyable, students become emotionally invested in the experience. That emotional connection often helps knowledge stay with them long after the lesson has ended.

These experiences help students understand that learning is not something separate from life; it is a tool for understanding and engaging with the world around them. When students are enjoying the process of learning and are more willing to take risks and explore new ideas, they start to challenge themselves, taking on a role that they might not have thought possible.

At Future School, we don't believe learning has to be easy to be enjoyable, we believe learning is most rewarding when students can see their progress and feel a genuine sense of achievement.

Because sometimes the most powerful learning happens when students stop asking, "Do I have to do this?" and start asking, "What can I do next?"
